“Whatever it is, you can get it on eBay”. But what if IT is an illegal product from an endangered species? A recent study on the sale of ivory on eBay found numerous cases worldwide of ivory for sale that fell afoul of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, as well as numerous national and provincial or state laws. eBay has acted quickly with a policy to ban the cross-border trade of ivory, but still permits the practice within the many countries where the online auction giant operates. John Wall examines the study, eBay’s response, and what it at all means for endangered elephants.
